How to Include Results on Your Resume

If you want your resume to yield results, then it must show results. The goal of a resume is to attract job interviews. Interviews are more likely to occur if your resume presents the quantifiable and measurable achievements you have produced. This is why the majority of my resume writing efforts and client collaboration is spent on extrapolating quantifiable achievements. I lead my clients to adopt a mindset that allows at least 90% of the resume content to be quantified by prompting them with certain questions. Even those of you who think there is nothing you can quantify, there is.

How to Include Results on Your Resume

Examples of questions you can keep in mind as you develop your own resume include:

  • How much time did you spend doing a certain task/project?
  • How did the results of the task/project benefit the company/department financially?
  • How many people did you collaborate with to achieve certain tasks/projects?
  • What size of a budget did you manage?

Why do numbers matter?

Math is everywhere; it can even be said it is the universal language. You need to show employers you understand their language. This can be done by quantifying and measuring the majority of your achievements. You must demonstrate how your achievements benefited your department or organization. Numbers will present a clear and precise idea as to the problems you solved, the amount of time you took to solve them, and the measures you used to do so.

As you write your resume, keep in mind there are more than 200 people applying or pursuing the same position you are targeting. Many of those people will be just as qualified or more qualified than you. A good resume can place you in a competitive position when competing with other qualified or more qualified candidates. One way to set yourself apart is by establishing your brand.

How do You Present Your Brand on Your Resume?

Your brand is the story your story; it’s what sets you apart. You can summarize your brand in one tagline in the top 1/3 of the first page of your resume. It is the edge you have to offer based on your unique experiences. It is a combination of what you have to offer, your experience, and personal characteristics presented on your resume.

I come across countless resumes that fail to show the amazing results the person has achieved. Several of the resumes I see do not follow an appealing and consistent format to attract readers. Failing to show these two elements on your resume makes it difficult for someone to set your resume apart for further review.

If you want your resume to compel employers to contact you, then it must show them why they should want to meet with you. Give them what they want. Give them numerous reasons. Make it easy for them to pick up the phone and call you.

You may be wasting valuable time and money “updating” your resume. Remember, time is money.
