5 Things You Need to STOP Doing While Pursuing a New Opportunity
Sometimes I find myself shocked at the amount of people that continue doing the same thing over and over again with little to no results. If I use a certain method more than enough times and notice poor results, I quickly think of a new strategy, because I do not like wasting time!
The majority of us have goals. I have goals. You have goals. So, we need to devote our time to achieving those goals without prolonging them unnecessarily. Many of you are seeking new career opportunities. This is a goal most of us have: to pursue new challenges and to have a better quality of life.
Here is a list of the 5 things you should STOP doing right now to make good use of your time while pursuing your new professional goals.
1) STOP filling out online job applications, as if it was your job!
What has been your results after completing job applications? For the majority, job applications have resulted in a complete waste of time. Since this job search method has yielded little to no results, then it should take very little of your time, if any.
2) STOP sending out your resume, as if it was a flock of crows!
Posting your resume on many job boards, recruiting firms, and in response to any and all job advertisements will not yield the results you want. Decide which positions you would like to pursue and then implement a new strategy to pursue those jobs.
3) STOP responding, “I am open to any opportunity” when asked “What position are you seeking?”
Responding “I am open to any opportunity” does not provide recruiters, hiring managers, and career services professionals with insight as to how to assist you. Those words actually translate into, “This person is going to waste my time” to recruiters and industry professionals. The more solid and concrete plan you have, the sooner you will receive attention from your target audience.
4) STOP making your resume target a myriad of positions.
Writing your resume to cover numerous positions that do not relate will only make readers wonder what position would be an ideal fit for you. Since there are hundreds of other resumes for the same position, hiring managers are not going to pause and try to figure out which position would be best for you, so they will move on to the next person who seems to be focused on specific positions that relate to each other.
5) STOP taking the easy way out.
Clicking the “submit resume” buttons on Indeed.com, CareerBuilder, and other job search sites is an easy process. Since it is so easy, it allows you to repeat the process numerous times. Because it is so easy, hundreds of other people are doing exactly the same, clicking the button and submitting their resumes for the same positions you are pursuing. While I do not believe you should completely ignore these sites, I do not think they should occupy much of your time.
One of the first questions, if not the first, I ask those who contact me is “What position are you pursuing?” Most quickly respond with a few positions they are pursuing. That is excellent! Others reply with what they would like to do, but are not sure of the title of the position they should pursue. This is okay too, but it is the first step we work on, identifying the target positions. Once we have a focus, then we are able to develop a strong and powerful dossier of branding tools!
