(Part 1 of 2)
If you get an interview almost every time you send out your resume, then you are probably a genius. But, if you are like the rest of us, you could probably use a miracle to land more interviews.
Most of us know there are numerous strategies you can apply to update your resume: updating the job descriptions, adding more information, improving your qualifications. The reality is you have probably already done this time and time again. Truth be told, none of these changes will compel employers to call you for an interview.
Regardless of your profession, if you need people to take a particular action (like to call you for an interview) you need to use these 4 basic rhetorical elements properly.
Getting Started
You must define your target audience. You must narrow your job search and focus your efforts on specific positions – but don’t worry, there will probably still be hundreds of jobs available for you.
Identifying your target audience is probably the most crucial step in laying the foundations of your job search. After all, why would the VP of a financial organization care about your background in information technology? You need to make sure to send your resume to employers who will value your background. By identifying your target audience, you will hit the nail on the head. If not, you will be searching for a job for a long, long time.
So, now that you have identified your target audience, let’s get to the more dense strategies.
1 – Logic
If you want to receive more interviews, you must target jobs for which you are logically qualified. A good rule of thumb is to make sure you meet at least 70% of the job requirements. Once you create a list of jobs for which you qualify, then you can create a resume that connects your background to the position in a logical and understandable manner.
Many individuals I work with express a desire to change industries. If you are seeking to work in a different industry, be sure to find an industry that connects with your background. This way, you can highlight those experiences on your resume for the new industry.
2 – Credibility
If you want the hiring manager to realize your resume is credible, then your history needs to be presented in a way that supports your claims of competencies. Your background, education, and civic engagement should all be presented to align with your target positions.
If you are targeting a new industry, you must emphasize how your background supports your claim of competency for the job you are seeking. You must present your background in such a way that conveys credibility to your target employer. This is especially challenging if your target employer is in an industry that differs from your industry.
Don’t Miss Out on Your Ideal Job
If you are serious about your career and your future, then it is time to grab the bull by its horns and do serious surgery to your resume. Be logical when selecting the positions for which you will market yourself by following the 70% estimate. Once you pinpoint your target positions, you will be able to show your credibility by presenting your relevant achievements and experiences. Many people believe the more jobs they go after, the more opportunities they will receive. Truth is the more jobs you go after, the more time you will spend on low quality interviews for jobs in which you are truly not interested.
Stay tuned for the second part of this article, which will emphasize two additional rhetorical elements that will compel employers to contact you.
