Do it Now!

If you plan on having a new job within a year or two and think you should wait until a few months prior to start marketing yourself, building relationships, sending your resume, and networking, then you will probably prolong your job search. Marketing, building relationships, sending resumes, and networking takes time. If you have a year or two to search for a new job, I recommend making these activities a part of your lifestyle now. Market yourself NOW, build relationships NOW, send your resume out NOW, and network NOW.

How can I market myself?

The majority of what you do should resemble your professional goals. For what are you marketing yourself? Would you like to work in the science industry as a chemist, a CEO or, or a Sales and Marketing Director? Which ever position you would like should be resembled through as many mediums as possible.

Do you have a personal website or online portfolio? If you do not and you believe you have work worth exhibiting, then you should consider having a personal website or online portfolio that will allow you to voice and showcase your experience in a personalized and unrestricted way.

Is your resume lame? Chances are you have an amazing professional background, but your resume is holding you miles back and keeping you from earning a substantial income. Your resume is a vital form of marketing and it should brand you as one of the best candidates for your target positions. Do not hold back on investing on such a vital part of your professional goals.

How can I build relationships?

LinkedIn is an extraordinary professional network. Join groups that pertain to your target industry. The more you post and comment on those groups, the more you will become familiar with other members, even those outside your network! LinkedIn groups allows you to send a private message to other group members, regardless of whether they are part of your network. The more you comment and post, the more people will remember your face and your name. Yes, you should have a profile picture, as people tend to remember faces more than names.

Do not forget about building relationships offline and in person. Having business cards is great for in-person scenarios! Met someone interesting at Starbucks, Barnes and Nobles, or at a networking event? I recently met someone interesting on an airplane while flying back ! Handing out a business card comes across as more professional and it is a seamless process, as opposed to taking out your cell phone and going through the process of adding a contact. A business card is surely more professional than writing your name and number on a piece of paper. Again, it all connects with the idea of marketing!

How do I go about sending my resume?

Because the majority of your competitors are probably using online job boards, I suggest steering clear of those to reduce your competition. One way you can contact employers is by doing it Da VInci style through a value proposition letter that will market and convey your value.

How should I start networking?

As you market yourself, build relations, and send your resumes, you should focus on networking. Network! Network! Network!

Did you like what someone said on LinkedIn? Reply with a substantial comment.

Did you learn something about a company to which one of your connections belong? Send them a message and share what you learned with that person.

Are you aware of an opportunity one of your connections might like? Share it with them. Even though you are searching for an opportunity yourself, do unto others as you would like done to you.

All of these points connect and should be a part of your lifestyle, they should become second nature to you. Start marketing yourself NOW, start building relationships NOW, start sending your resume out NOW, and start networking NOW. Don’t forget to have fun while doing this.
