How Less is More in Job Searching

Have you ever heard the expression, “Less equals more?”

People are under the impression that to promote themselves, they need to write an abundance of information to stand apart and above the competition. The truth is quite the opposite, actually.

For instance, the more you write on your letters, the less likely they will be read. Your target employers are occupied with their regular workload and reading a letter that seems like an essay is time consuming. That means you are not only wasting your time writing the letter, but that letter will probably not even be read.

In this context, less also equals more.

The less you write, the more likely your target audience will read your letter, because it will be easy and quick to read without consuming much time out of their day. Your letter should also have a call to action that leads your reader to take the next step, which is to communicate via phone or in person for an interview.

To effectively execute this strategy, you should:

  • Write a bold and appealing message by using almost every word with a purpose.

  • Make the letter attractive, eye appealing, and enjoyable to the reader.

  • Use the letter, as a means to market additional qualifications through other channels, like your LinkedIn profile or a personal website.

This is an excellent strategy to pursue the high percentage of jobs filled in the hidden job market without even sending your resume!

Some of the decision makers you would contact have assistants who open their mail. If they see a copy of your resume and they do not have an “official” vacancy, then your resume will probably be sent to the human resources department. If you do not include your resume, then your simple, yet powerful letter will most likely be given to your contact, which might results in a new opportunity! Eventually, of course, you will be required to present a resume.
