You finally have a few interviews scheduled. Then, you walk into the interview and give the potential employer a weak handshake.
What a disappointment. The interview has already started off on the wrong hand shake.
A handshake can tell employers about your personality, such as whether you are a weak or bold person, introverted or extroverted, outspoken or reserved. Depending on the position you are interviewing for, employers will prefer certain characteristics more than others.
Personally, I have been excited to meet someone for the first time. I approach them with a smile while making eye contact. I extend my arm and suddenly, the handshake momentum is stomped by a mere finger shake! I feel as though it interferes with our direct professional transparency; as if it blocks our professional flow.
An article published on Business Insider called “Get Hands On: The Importance of a Good Handshake in your Job Search” provides good tips on making a good first impression through a proper handshake.
Employers might not remember a good handshake, but they will probably remember the feeling they had after a bad one. Don’t be the one to stomp a handshake.
Handshake Tips:
- Extend your arm at enough distance to meet the other person’s arm without having to bend your elbow (unless their is not enough space for a proper distance).
- Close your fingers and open your entire palm to meet the palm of the other person.
- Close your hand and make just enough pressure, but not more pressure than the employer is using.
Extra Tips:
- Make eye contact while shaking hands.
- Smile while making eye contact.
