If you have been to job interviews before, then you know this is a common question in job interviews. This question is especially difficult to answer if it is asked in the middle or at the end of the interview, as you would think, “Well, because of all the reasons we just discussed.” As tempting as it might be to reply something similar to this, I suggest taking this question as another opportunity to market and brand yourself.

If you have read a couple of my other blogs, then you know I emphasize researching the company you will be interviewing. Doing this will help you formulate a response that will resonate with the interviewer and their objective for the position for which you are being interviewed.

Research the company so that when you respond to this question, you can do it in such a way that will make sense to the key decision makers. Let them know you speak their language. This way, that person will care and probably remember you among the other percentage of candidates they selected for an interview.

As you respond to the “why should I hire you” question, let go of all the lame answers and think about why your former employers hired you. Also, think about why any of your former employers loved having you as part of the team. Use examples and comments or compliments they would say, as a result of your work and contribution.

The best way to respond interview questions is to sound natural. If you prepare and rehearse your ideal responses to interview questions numerous times, you will be more than likely to sound natural. You can start practicing by filling in the blanks of the sample below.

Sample response:

Jane: John, why should we hire you?

You: Well Jane, I can tell you why my former employers hired me and why they loved working with me. They hired me, because the department was going through (what problem or challenges?) and I had experience in (what did you have experience in?).After only 90 days, I was able to (how did you improve the problem?).

My managers and colleagues loved (what did they love about you in the workplace?) and I know your company is (what did you learn about the company that relates to the position you are interviewing for and what you just mentioned about your former employers?).

Another way of responding is by sharing what you would like to do for the company within your first 90 days. How would you do this? Well, if you researched the company and the position you would fulfill, you should have prepared three ideas you believe would benefit and be of interest to the potential company. Discussing those ideas should lead into contributions you would make for their company, if they hired you.
