Does this question remind you of specific interview situations?
While I know you probably cringe and become anxious at the thought of having to answer this question, I must tell you it is a great opportunity for you to take control of the interview in a subtle way and excel immensely.
In fact, I think this is one of the easiest and best question you can receive.
If you are a good sales person and enjoy showing your savviness, then this is your moment. If you think you are not a good sales person, then you will quickly learn the basics of how to sell yourself by answering this famous interview question.
The answer to this question should be professional and not personal; therefore, your birthplace is irrelevant.
Here is one example of how to answer this great question.
Interviewer: “Hello, tell me a little about yourself.”
You: “Well, John / Jane, for the past four years I was committed to increase revenues at my previous employer. I (talk about your achievements) by (elaborate on the strategies you used to achieve them). While researching your company (another point in favor to you – shows you are prepared), I learned your company has an opportunity to grow within X area. This is the area I specialized with one of my previous employers. I was able to (talk about how you benefited your previous employer in that area) and I believe I can develop a similar strategy in your company.”
This response provided the employer with the information they needed to know to decide whether you will be an asset to their company. In reality, employers want to know, “What is it about you that will benefit this company?”
By taking a hold of this question, you told the employer you
✓ are loyal and committed to the company you work for
✓ are focused on achieving goals
✓ are organized
✓ probably develop plans to achieve your goals.
✓ researched their company
✓ identified areas the company needs improvement on
Indeed, this question is vague and open ended, but those are the factors that allow you to tell the employer what you want them to know while showing your creativity and preparation.
While you answer this question, keep in mind to
✓ maintain eye contact
✓ smile while you speak (from time to time)
✓ show excitement (positive energy)
* Try not to exceed two minutes while answering any interview questions.
