Why Your Career Summary, Company Research, & Thoughtful References are all Important

How can resume writing strategies enhance job search success?

To begin with, your resume will most likely need to pass applicant tracking systems (ATSs). This requires essential resume writing strategies to format an ATS friendly resume, include keywords naturally, and to attempt to keep the system from detecting your age range.

Additionally, once your resume passes ATS, before it goes through the initial six-second scan, it needs to be appealing enough to be read. For instance, I have come across two-page resumes crammed with four pages worth of text. No one wants to read that, regardless of how successful the person behind the resume is.

Finally, if your resume gets in front of a hiring manager, you are going to want to combat any red flags. You can do this by applying appropriate strategies based on your particular challenges and obstacles. Likewise, you will want to draw the eye to your most impressive accomplishments right away by applying strategies geared towards content placement and design.

How Important is a Tailored Resume Summary?

If nothing else hits the mark, your career summary must knock it out of the park. This is the opportunity you have to say what you want to say outside of the structured and technical restrictions of a resume. But, keep in mind, the summary is no longer an objective statement about what you would like to gain from the opportunity. That is what you see in outdated resumes. Modern resume career summaries focus on the value you have to offer employers.

You can take this opportunity to:

  • share additional details crucial to your target positions
  • mention national or global travels you have engaged in that relates to your target industry or profession
  • unique experience you have over most of your competition
  • articles you have been quoted on or interviews you’ve had by known sources

Additional Details You Can Include:

While you are at liberty to include what you believe is best, I recommend you be strategic by mentioning requirements crucial to your target positions that you either did not say or mentioned on the second page of your resume. You can find these requirements in your target job announcements.

This is some of the information I gather from my clients to craft a bold and impactful career summary. Remember, the summary is one of the first parts of your resume potential employers see, because it is at eye level. Also, it is part of the top 1/3 of your resume, which is the section I have emphasized in previous posts.

Make it count!

Standing Out in a Job Interview

Wait ‘til the end.

Wait until you get an opportunity to ask questions, be prepared with three to five questions regarding the company vision, objectives, projects, and/or future goals.

Perhaps some or none of this information will be shared during your meeting, but, if you fully prepare for your interview (unlike many of your competitors), you will have unique questions most of the other candidates probably won’t have.

You can create three to five questions based on:

  • recent press releases
  • news articles published online
  • information published on their LinkedIn company page
  • website
  • information about their leadership or executive team

You do not need to memorize all of this information, you can take brief notes about them to trigger your thoughts during the interview.

This is an amazing way to engage your interviewer at a higher level and likely more than some of your competitors.

Also, this could lead to the interviewer mentioning or providing insight on information not mentioned to other candidates, giving you a competitive edge.

Additionally, you can use the notes you’ve taken during the interview to create the you will send within 24 hours.

Moreover, you can continue the dialogue regarding the vision, projects, and objectives of the company via your thank you letter.

Furthermore, you can continue to leverage your research in your – by mentioning additional information that ties into your original discussion, potential ideas you have, or information regarding their competition or the company’s business pains.

There are many ways to leverage your company research and the information gathered during your interview.

The resume is your most important career marketing document (your LinkedIn profile is right up there with it), but in today’s competitive market, a more that also includes a thank you and follow-up letter is essential throughout your job search and interview journey.

We are heading towards a job market where people are not waiting until they need a new job to prepare their resume and career marketing documents.

Instead, people who are happy with their current job are reaching out for a that capture their successes and accomplishments.

This type of prepares you for what the future holds. Also, it treats your resume, not as an archaic file, but as the it is.

Do you show up to job interviews without your references?

The interview is going well, the potential employer asks for your references, and you have to get back to them, because you don’t have them with you.

This breaks the flow of the interview and hiring process. Also, this can make you seem unprepared and not as interested as the employer thought.

Always try to stay ahead of your competitors, even in what might seem like the small things, such as showing up with your references.

If you are prepared with your references, is it just a list of thoughtless references, or is it a document with strategic references, glowing testimonials, and branded the same way the rest of your marketing documents?

Your reference document is not just a paper with names and phone numbers, it is another marketing tactic you have in your arsenal.

Not only that, but I can assure you the majority of your competition is not using this document to market themselves. This means you would absolutely stand out and continue to impress during the interview and hiring process.

Be ready with a well-branded reference document to stand out and make a lasting impression during the interview and hiring process.
